Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and larger refueling tanks should be stored in a different complex or building so as to be more secure. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity should have "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a safe enclosure that could only be accessed by authorized employees. It is essential for the safety of the operator, and everybody they work with, that these safety measures are strictly complied with.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected. This task can use retraining systems like concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods could be utilized. It is also vital to have a fire extinguisher present at the refueling station. Moreover, anyone who is operating the fueling station is required to be trained and also should be trained to safely and effectively utilize the fire extinguisher. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The OSHA or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration require that everyone who is operating an industrial powered forklift or lift truck is trained properly. This training covers both the hands-on training and the classroom part. After the training sessions have been finished, the individual should be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also includes the proper method of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also includes site-specific procedures as well as the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving.
Medical Treatment
There should be a Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS center situated inside the facility where the forklift is operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents which are used on site. This would also include the acid in the lift truck battery, together with the propane which is utilized to refuel the unit.
The MSDSs sheets are required to be available to all employees at all times. For instance, if an exposure incident happens, the person needs to be evaluated right away. If any medical attention is considered necessary, to should be given without any delay. Usually, if you are not sure if medical care is considered necessary, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a medical professional if you fear it is severe. Always better to be safe than sorry.
