A stock picker, also called an order picker is a machinery which is somewhat like a forklift. It allows the operator to use forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some items, and this feature is something the forklift does not offer. Normally, order pickers are operated by electricity. These kind of machines are mainly utilized in a warehouse setting. Most often they are used for transporting pallets and completing certain jobs in the shelving and stocking department.
The order picker operator sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the equipment backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. When the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines could be lifted up to the required level which makes it really convenient for the operator. Like for example, if the materials required, are situated on a shelf which the operator could not reach, then whole platform is capable of being raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is then lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then driven or directed to its next location. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, however, several companies may have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker is also able to place pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers can be utilized to finish these particular jobs at some companies instead.
